Update to 2008 Goals
In light of the stock market’s volatility, but with the optimism of an American who believes in the economy’s eventual improvement, I am still saving, but I’m making some changes/updates to my 2008 goals.
1. New Goal for down-payment fund: Deposit another $5K by December 31.
I like this goal because it is something I have control over. If my current budget keeps working for me (and if I’m able to add in my bonuses through the end of the year, without talking myself into other things I want), this should be easy.
2. Update to emergency fund: I’m already at 85.7% of my goal ($8K).
If I accumulate $8K by the end of the year and continue my $900/month spending plan, I will have an emergency fund that can cover me for almost nine months of living expenses.
REWARD: If I can accomplish both #1 and #2 by the end of the year, I am going to start a new fund, one solely dedicated to the purchase of a new laptop. Hopefully I could have one by spring of 2009.

Good luck with your new goals. I set up a goal for myself to save for a brand new laptop and there is nothing like after months of saving and keeping restraint to purchase something else than to walk home with your brand new computer. I think your emergency savings goal is great, but at the same time some prices in computers are coming down as well and if you don’t mind sacrificing a little bit of the fund for the computer you may get a great deal. Apple previously had a deal where if you buy a Macbook you could get a printer and itouch for free. Look out for deals like that.

You should check into the mini laptops that are making an appearance. By Spring 09 there should be many options. Dell just released their own. If you only need one for internet surfing and smaller tasks, could be great.
Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I’m getting kind of excited about the possibility of a new computer… but I really do need to wait. I don’t *need* one as much as want one, so it will be a reward if I can meet these other goals. The mini laptops sound interesting; I’ll look into it!
