Do You Do Dumb Stuff at Work?

July 10th, 2008

So, in the course of yesterday’s work day, my behavior was borderline freakish, I’m being serious. I honestly don’t know what was wrong with me, but I embarrassed myself not once, not twice, but a grand total of six times.

Here’s the rundown:

1. I misunderstood a caller’s name, talking with him for a good 10 minutes before realizing he wasn’t who I thought.
2. Once said caller realized I’d gotten confused and called me on it, I fumbled all over myself trying to explain.
3. After getting off the phone with him, I decided it was, definitely, a order-out-food day. So my coworker and I headed out. I took a wrong turn and got us almost lost.
4. Paying for my takeout at the restaurant, I knocked over the metal lid on the toothpick container, sending it bouncing onto the tile floors. Every head in the packed place turned to me.
5. I went down the parking lot lane the wrong way, almost hitting a car.
6. I messed up something in our records for the day.

And these are just the things I remember right now. Let’s be honest: I’m forgetting something, for sure.

Quick, someone: make me feel better. Tell me you do dumb stuff, too. Please?

StumbleUpon It!

lol…well, now that you mention it…

I went to refill my water bottle yesterday and instead of walking to our kitchenette I decided to use the water fountain in our hallway. I’m standing there…waiting for it to fill…and when I finish I realize it won’t stop!! I bang it a little to see if it’ll stop the water, but nothing. I wasn’t sure who to call for help since I’m kinda new in the building. Suddenly I hear footsteps coming down the hallway, and instead of trying to get it resolved I turned on my heels and ran back into my office before they could see me!!

Sounds silly, but I was really embarrassed!

Once, as a new employee, I had an owner of the company I worked for ask me how long a feature would take to implement in some software. I replied as follows:
“Three weeks. 45 minutes for me to add the code and then the rest of the time for you to think of tweaks.” I have regretted that smarty-pants remark ever since :)

Haha, I hope today goes a little better for you.

We all have “off” days. Like the time I went to get ice at Ry’s mom’s house and the ice dispenser on the fridge didn’t stop spewing ice.

Or at work when I locked myself out of my office last week.

Plenty. But mostly email gaffes like not attaching documents to a mass email to major execs…. or getting things confused.

LOL Grad Girl. I do stupid stuff all the time. Just five minutes ago I nearly plowed into a car while zooming out of the driveway for coffee - (And I’m a good driver, I really am!)

I mouthed the word ’sorry’ but he did not look amused :P

QL: That’s completely awesome and so something I would do. In fact, the first week at my job, I was finishing the yogurt parfait I’d packed and wanted to wash out the tupperware container. I went to the kitchen to wash it out and realized the drain had a filter, so it would only take water. I had all this yogurt and bits of granola floating in the sink. That was awkward.

Randy: Oh gosh, that’s a rough one! Good you can laugh about it now, though, right? LOL.

L: Why is it that everyone’s stories remind me of things I’ve done? Like your locking yourself out of the office reminds me of when I locked myself out of the house… while my parents were out of the country. That was super cool. Did I mention I didn’t haven shoes on?

FB:I have learned the e-mail lesson the hard way. And AIM. One day, I accidentally sent a message to the wrong person, and I about died.

Jennifer Lynn: Ha! So been there, too. Glad to know I’m not alone!

The parking spaces are really tight at work, and one morning I was really out of it. I flat out bumped a car while turning into one of the spaces. Luckily, the car I hit was so old and beat up that I couldn’t even tell if I had left a mark or a dent on it. I pay a little more attention while parking now.

Oh, please. All the time!!! I’ll schedule a meeting for one of my managers, and then realize I put it on the wrong day. Once (ok maybe twice) I actually booked travel for my manager for the complete wrong days AND with the wrong cost center attached (which involves an embarrassing call to our corporate travel agency). Just today, I emailed our entire NY Admin team (25+ people) asking who wanted to help build our Irvine Website (someone responded saying “I assume you meant the NY website? ummmm duh.).

It happens to the best of us…enjoy your weekend and relax! :-)

BGS: Nicely done; at least it was a banged-up car! One day, not at work, I was out of it and bumped a pedestrian while backing out of my parking space. (oh, dear heavens. i really am a full-blown psycho.)

Kim: LOL. I so, so relate!! Thanks for making me feel better! :)

[...] happy to say I survived the rest of my week, even after my crazy Wednesday. And, while I’m thrilled it’s Saturday and I can leave the office to fend for itself [...]

Ok, I bumped someone on a bike on Friday. I felt so horrible; I’m glad I’m not alone!
