Blogger vs. Wordpress

April 23rd, 2008

OK, blogging buddies, I need your advice: should I stick with Wordpress, or do I switch to Blogger?

Originally, I chose WP because of its more varied templates and popularity. I’d used blogspot for other, personal things, and WP seemed new and different.

What I hate about WP: using the free version means I can’t alter my template very much (i.e., I can’t display banners/advertisements, I can’t rework the HTML of my pages, etc.).

Options to do something about this: I could (1) Buy a domain and use Wordpress at my own site, in which I could have more control (Negatives: I don’t know how the heck this works or what I’d have to do, and it costs money) or (2) Switch to a blogging software that allows me more control (i.e., Blogger).

Do you have an opinion? Have you used both softwares? Which would you recommend?

And, if you are a blogger who switched urls at some point in your history, did you lose a lot of readers?

StumbleUpon It!

I used to use Blogger, but I like the way Wordpress looks better. However, I didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to have advertising! I’m planning on keeping the free Wordpress account until my readership is big enough to justify using Wordpress.org with a host, which allows you to have ads and such. If you keep using Wordpress.com but buy your own domain name, total cost is under $20, but you still can’t have ads without ponying up the hosting fees (at least $11/month or so). You can also currently pay $10 to modify your template in Wordpress.com, you’ve just got to edit the actual code.

I switched to wordpress for the better templates. I do wish they’d allow advertising and let me edit the CSS. But I don’t think that I have enough readership to justify moving to something with ads.

If you think you are going to keep this blog going long term, it seems most of the “big” blogs are hosted for a fee

Oh, and no, i didn’t lose any readers (that I know of). I didn’t have many to lose either!

I would recommend bluehost.com for hosting if you decide to buy. They’ll host and buy your domain for a good price and they have an easy WordPress installer utility that keeps you from having to know everything about web development up front. Plus their staff are friendly and I’ve had almost zero downtime. I don’t care for blogger either. Plus, bluehost’s referral program could keep your future hosting costs down, or earn you money.

I use blogger, and I’m a big blogger fan…mostly because it’s VERY easy to use, free, and heck, I kind of like using the products my company churns out. Makes me feel all supportive. :-)

GG, I made the switch from free WP to paid and it really wasn’t very hard. There are tons of guides on how to do it and the only downside is paying for the hosting, which I paid around $60 for a year with Dreamhost (there was a coupon somewhere). If you need links and stuff on making the switch let me know, there is so much out there on this.

If you do decide to stick with Wordpress but move to your own hosting, when you register your domain name make sure it’s a “private” domain registration. Otherwise, you name and contact information will be blasted out to the internet.

I remember that you cherish your anonymity.

I’m at Blogger right now, switching to Wordpress ASAP (Wordpress.org, though). The benefits are just so many that I see no reason to stay at Blogger anymore (I’ve just been blogging again for a week, but quickly realzed that a week with Blogger was long enough). If you’re going to switch to anything switch to Wordpress.org.
