I would have requested the waitress/waiter make separate checks and I would have paid my half, and let Z pay her half on her own (probably through a credit card then if she only had $10). Although, I have definitely gone out to eat thinking I had more cash on hand than I did, and some places only take cash, so I have had to borrow from someone else on occasion. This does not sound like the same situation though...OY! I'm sure its happened to me especially when we run into a place that ONLY takes cash and I didn't realize it beforehand (I'm notorious for NEVER having cash on me :-/ ) I always offer to pay back though, or if they take cards I'd charge it. (My friends actually laugh at the fact that I always insist on paying people back...even if it was just a dollar or two.) I would've also checked my wallet before I ordered to see how much money I had if I was going to insist on paying cash. The part that I find rude is that Z didn’t even suggest to pay it back!
