Money Story: Lunching
April 22nd, 2008
Recently, my mom was invited out to lunch by Z, who wanted to pick her brain a little, regarding an organization Mom is involved in. They went to a average restaurant (Z picked), and Z ordered a meal that cost $12.99. Mom ordered something similar, maybe a little lower in cost.
The bill came, and Z pulled out her wallet.
“Well, I have $10,” she said.
No, that’s not a typo: She spent $13 and was willing to contribute $10. So my mom paid the difference, happily.
Anyone been in a similar situation?

That’s so so soooo rude of Z. I am so upset just from reading it!!!
If I was your mom, I’d have suggested Z to charge it on her credit card.
Your mom is very nice.
Yeah I would’ve totally been pissed. I only have a couple friends where we go back and forth treating each other, so I would’ve gotten the tab. Anyone else, “Sorry, I’ll be paying the $15 my meal costs, you can charge your meal”. Yikes. That’s pretty balsy.
Wait, Z invited HER… and then couldn’t be bothered to pay what her meal cost? let alone chip in for tip?
I mean, we all have that friend who never seems to have enough cash on hand to pay for her/his meal — and it’s happened to me — but that’s cause for apology, not just hoping someone else will pick up the check. Geez.
The part that I find rude is that Z didn’t even suggest to pay it back! I’m sure its happened to me especially when we run into a place that ONLY takes cash and I didn’t realize it beforehand (I’m notorious for NEVER having cash on me :-/ ) I always offer to pay back though, or if they take cards I’d charge it. (My friends actually laugh at the fact that I always insist on paying people back…even if it was just a dollar or two.)
I would’ve also checked my wallet before I ordered to see how much money I had if I was going to insist on paying cash.
Yeah, that’s very odd that Z invited her to lunch, asking your mom for a favor (I classify letting someone pick your brain a favor), picking the restaurant AND ordering something that she knew she didn’t have money for!
Although, I have definitely gone out to eat thinking I had more cash on hand than I did, and some places only take cash, so I have had to borrow from someone else on occasion.
This does not sound like the same situation though…OY!
That’s just appalling!
I would have requested the waitress/waiter make separate checks and I would have paid my half, and let Z pay her half on her own (probably through a credit card then if she only had $10).
