Home Decorating = ER Fund Spending

March 27th, 2008

Sometimes I really feel like an idiot.

I got this idea in my head that I really wanted some of those floating wall shelves on this vacant wall in my bedroom. I looked around at prices, comparing Target, Amazon, Linen N’ Things, Wal-Mart, Meijer and all the other discount home-type places. Target was the winner.

Tuesday night, I bought three 36-inch shelves, each for $25.

Tonight, I tried hanging them, and I’ll spare you the details except to say this: now I have two rather large holes in the wall, drywall I had to vacuum, a broken shelf and busted screws. Two other people were involved, and they’re not happy either.

It’s just a big, disappointing, frustrating pain in the neck. Now I have to pay to fix the wall, on top of trying to talk Target into letting me return their shoddy stuff.

Good thing I have an emergency fund.

StumbleUpon It!

Oh no! It reminds me of when I bought one of those $25 bookcases from Walmart. It looks cute enough, but when I was building it I refused to wait for anyone to help me since I was in such a “hurry”. When I went to pick it up/erect it one of the screws was pulled out of the particleboard and pulled a huge chunk with it. It still stands ok, but I’m scared to move it at all. (What more did I expect for $25?!!)

By the way, thanks for the instructions! I now have my chart on my page! (For now it looks just like yours, hope you don’t mind! I’ll have to find a color chart to customize it a little.)

Ah, yes, the joys of hanging shelves. Tried to do that in my kitchen a few years ago. Spent ~$75 on the shelves and supplies. Spent ~8 hours trying to hang them.

They now sit against the wall in my room, taking up space. And I enjoy the nice holes that are in my kitchen wall. Ugh.

Glad to know I’m not alone! Tonight, at least, it turns out that Target would take them back. BIG pain about the holes.

I would love to know how other people get their shelves to look so effortless.

Oh, you know what? I bought one of those shelves at home depot or lowes and was just so disappointed by both the quality of the construction of the shelf and the quality of the hardware meant to keep it on the wall. They display them up where you can’t get a good look. Sorry you made holes!

Look on amazon for “umbra shelf”, those are fun. There are also some neat shelves you’ll find there if you look up “wallscapes gallery”.

Cool! Thanks, FGS! I’ll definitely check that out!

Go to the Container Store. There is one in Oakbrook. That is the place to look for that kind of thing, including umbra stuff.
