More on Budgeting Software
March 25th, 2008
Thanks for all the great advice on personal finance software! I bought a copy of Quicken at Sam’s Club, took it home, couldn’t get it to sync my bank accounts and returned it.
Now I’m using Mint.com. It’s free and does everything the Quicken online did, so I canceled my Quicken. I also still have my Excel budget and my envelopes in Snowmint.
Have you tried Mint? It’s really fantastic (and again: free!). All I had to do was insert my accounts, and it’s categorized all my spending for me. It tracks my ING accounts and my bank accounts in one neat place.

glad you like Mint. everything about the site seems so polished and professional.
After reading your post yesterday, I decided to try out Mint.com. The software appeared to work great until I tried to access my bank account. For some unknown reason, the program states that my login information is incorrect which I know is not the case. I was wondering if you have had any problems with it?

Ooooh, more financial tracking goodies?
*sprints for mint.com*

PennyPincher,
That’s almost exactly the problem I had with Quicken! I wonder if certain programs don’t like certain banks or something?
So far with Mint, I’ve gotten all my bank accounts through, but it won’t recognize by GAP card (which I hardly use).
Hmmn… since it’s free and all, don’t give up yet. Maybe you could e-mail them for help?
Good luck! and let me know if you figure it out!
Gilded: Right?
I had tried out some online software that sounds a lot like mint. I ended up not using it and I got a little wary about having my bank information on the company’s servers.I should have researched it more before I signed up, because I haven’t found any way to cancel/delete my account.
With sites that you grant permission to your financials, be sure to check that they use some sort of security software as well.
Good point, LJK. I just looked through Mint’s security info, and it seems safe:
http://www.mint.com/safe.html.
But it’s always good to be careful.
I was hoping someone had tried out this site! I really want to sign up, but like LJK I was apprehensive about the security. I’ll be watching to see if you still enjoy the mint after a month!
Thanks for being a guinea pig… =)
