Redbook, Win Me Over.
Very mysteriously, I’m still getting my unordered, unpaid-for Redbook magazines.
In fact, after I originally posted, wondering where they were coming from and why they were bothering me, they didn’t disappear; they procreated. Now, I’m also receiving US Weekly, which, truth be told, I still throw in the recycling bin as soon as I receive it. I just can’t get in to all that celebrity gossip.
Redbook was a quick toss, too, for a while. Then, last month I think, I noticed Giada Di Laurentiis was the cover story and thought: AH! Now they’ve got me.
In that perusal, I noticed the mostly trashy Redbook also features financial articles, go figure. There was the one about the overspenders, the one about financial tips, the one with a write-up about the Budget Fashionista.
I don’t know. Maybe this was their plan all along.

When I was in college and living in a student class house we hooked our TV (mine actually) up and noticed we had cable access. None of us talked to the cable company about it. None of us said a thing. Then one day in the second semester I turned on the TV to the ant-fights all over.
I walked down to the cable company and put in a subscription. No one said anything.
US Weekly is so horrible! One of the funniest exchanges I’ve ever had in my life went something like this:
Deployed, two military members (one male and one female) are in an office.
Me: Okay, I’m going to the store across the base. Do you want me to pick you up anything?
Totally male guy: Yeah, can you pick me up a People or US Weekly if they have the new month?
Me, pausing, blinking: Seriously?
Guy: Yeah.
Weird. And all the guys were that way! It was strange.
LOL. What in the world? Do you think he likes the pictures of all the girl celebrities?
Have you ever looked into writing for Redbook or their ilk? I find this THE most frustrating market.
FGS: I took a class all about it, in fact. There is a method to the very competitive nature of their selections, I’m sure… but it’s hard. I’d recommend reading it like crazy and crafting pieces that are similar. Then package a cover letter/sample and be aggressive. Persistence could pay off!
