frugal foodie thursdays

October 31st, 2007

I should tell you a little something about me: in addition to being a frugal writer committed to Biblical finance who PF blogs and sometimes runs and also likes to travel, I am head over heels for one more thing: quality cuisine. I am a big-time, no-denying-it, long-time foodie.

Though I don’t get to spend as much time as I’d like with this passion, it still finds its way into my everyday life. I pack my lunches every day, I bake something every week or so, I go to the grocery store(s) on a regular basis. And cooking, for all its pleasures, is something I want to make more of.

So.

I hereby declare Thursdays to be frugal foodie Thursdays. Here at This Writer’s Wallet, I will be posting on frugal, food-related topics every week. Sometimes, I’ll review a local restaurant, sometimes I’ll share a recipe, sometimes I’ll link you to a bunch of others…you get the idea. It’ll be a regular, food-loving shmorgasboard of delicious info.
Why don’t you join me? You can participate once, every week, or whenever you’d like. If you post your own foodie Thursday entry, comment here with your link, and I’ll mention you in the post. It begins tomorrow, November 1. Happy eating!

Since I don’t concentrate on frugal food advice, I’ll just leave a long winded comment.

A coworker of mine has an interesting philosophy on grocery shopping. He saves approximately ten to fifteen more times on groceries than the cost of a Sunday newspaper by merely clipping coupons found within its pages. At that point he considers the newspaper free since it pays for the groceries at the expense of coupon clipping.

I don’t follow the same mindset since the coupons control what you can buy and when you should purchase them. Also, a good number of coupons target preprocessed items. Granted I could save a dollar on soup, but do I need the extra salt intake? No.

One of the money saving grocery shopping techniques that I use is from an article that I read a long time ago. Many a time, I’ve strolled buy something that I usually buy, rounding the corner and seeing a “SALE: Only x dollars on 10” sign on yogurt. Do I really need ten containers of yogurt? No. I only purchase the yogurt that I need. All of it is discounted. The grocery store lures you into thinking that you need to buy all ten containers to save money.

Now, if I can only steer clear of the “SALE: Buy one get one free” signs on granola bars. I seem to devour two boxes of them within the same duration as walking out of the store holding one box. Since willpower usually gets the best of me, I should hide one in a far away pantry: out of sight and out of mind.

Sagacious: I got so interested in your comment, I visited your blog and commented there. Then I totally forgot about responding here. :) Thanks for the great tips and for visiting. You are wise to see through coupon gimmicks.

I was just reading that stores know they can add a sign to an item: “Special Deal” or such. Even if the price doesn’t change, people will be more likely to buy it.

SF: You know, I have to admit, I’ve NEVER had baked polenta. I don’t even know what it is!
