an out-of-town friend

July 8th, 2007

My college roommate came into town this weekend, surprising me. She stayed both Friday and Saturday nights, and we spent our time relaxing, watching television and going out to eat. I haven’t seen her since December, and before that, last July. Since our meetings are so seldom, I tend to be less thrifty when she comes.

What do I mean by less thrifty? Here’s a rough breakdown of the weekend costs:

Friday night Chinese food: $7.
Saturday Greek lunch: $13.
DVD 4 of The Office, from Blockbuster: $4.
Turtle ice cream cone: $3.50
Chipotle dinner: $8.50
Sunglasses and radio from Target: $25.
A Sunday newspaper for my parents: $2.

Total cost: $63.

I can’t remember the last time I spent so much on mainly food and entertainment in a weekend. Sigh. As I said though, she only comes once or twice a year, so I suppose it’s OK. If I’d known she was coming, I could’ve planned better and probably saved some money by cooking in or having coupons ready. Nonetheless, we had fun, and the surprise was priceless.

StumbleUpon It!

Do you have cash stored away for random fun things? Thats how I manage that portion of the fun things that happen in life.

It’s funny you should say that: I’ve been really rethinking my current budgeting strategy.

I had to money for this weekend, in my dining out fund and everything. However, I tend to be one of those crazy people who tries not to spend even within her budget. *roll eyes*

    I’m working on it.

$63 for a weekend isn’t bad considering it isn’t a typical thing for you, and I bet you had a great time with her! Considering you could have spent just $63 on a dinner for two .. and you stretched it for the entire weekend, that’s pretty good. :)

$63 isn’t too bad if you look at each day and how much you spent. It’s not like you spent $10-20 on eating out or buying something. I dont know if you got the email but Blockbuster was doing $1.99 rentals with the coupon. But it’s hard to predict when those things arrive.

Aw, you guys know how to make a girl feel better. Thanks!

(And SF: no, I never got the coupon! Man!)
